This week in:
Math:  We will review the concept of addition using manipulatives.  Once the concept is clear we will begin activities to facilitate memorization.  It is imperative that these facts be memorized to ensure success in subtraction.  Math homework will be sent home each night in the homework folder (beginning tonight).  This should be  completed and returned in the folder the next day.

Language Arts:
ABC Order
Genre - Realistic Fiction - A story using made up characters that could happen in real life.
Conventions - Capitals and ending punctuation
Subject and Predicate
Poetry - “I’m Great” and “I Can’t Wait for Summer”
Stories - Henry and Mudge  by Cynthia Rylant
Novel - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Word Study - Short Vowels a and i - Spelling Words Attached
Picture Books - Miss Nelson is Missing, Oh the Places You’ll Go!, First Day Jitters, 12 Ways to Get 11
Comprehension - Sequence of Events, Infer/Predict
Book of Virtues - “The Lion and the Mouse” - “The Legend of the Dipper”
Social Studies:  We will discuss each of the virtues of our character development.  This will lead itself to our more in depth study of each of the virtues as the year progresses.
Geography:  What is a Globe
Music of the Week:  We will listen to music from Mozart.  
Interesting Fact:  Mozart composed music at age five and played the piano and violin at six.  He composed his first opera by age 11.
Technology:  Laptop procedures, word art
Character Development - We will cover the social graces and manners that will be expected throughout the year.  Our virtues for the months of August and September are kindness and Compassion.  We will continue character development throughout the year.  
Vocabulary Words
Words and Definitions Will come home Tuesday!!!!  They will have a test over the words Friday.  I will not record the grade for the Vocab test this week so they will have a chance to get comfortable with the format.  We will work on these words throughout the week but, additional review at home is encouraged.
